What is MobilePay?

MobilePay was launched in 2013 by Danske Bank and quickly became Denmark's most widely used mobile payment method. Since then, it has also become available in Finland. MobilePay has a total of over 4 million active users, most of whom are in Denmark.

The app is used for peer-to-peer payments as well as online purchases, donations, and cash register payments. MobilePay is fully mobile: customers link their payment account to the app and pay easily with a tap or QR code.

How does MobilePay work as a payment method for webshops?

Customers pay via their MobilePay app using a phone number, QR code, or mobile payment link. For online payments, the transaction is confirmed immediately in the app, similar to Apple Pay or Swish.

For webshops, this means a fast, secure, and user-friendly mobile payment method. MobilePay is indispensable, especially in the Danish market: over 90% of the population knows and actively uses it.

How much does a payment via MobilePay cost?

The costs for MobilePay transactions are usually between 1% and 2% of the purchase amount, depending on your PSP and the number of transactions. Sometimes a fixed fee is added on top of this. What are the advantages and disadvantages of MobilePay?

Advantages:

1. Widely accepted in Denmark and Finland
MobilePay has a very high adoption rate: more than 90% of the Danish population uses it. If you target this market, you will significantly increase your conversion rate by offering MobilePay.

2. Super fast and mobile optimized
MobilePay is designed entirely for mobile devices. Payments are completed quickly via the app, which leads to fewer dropouts at checkout, especially among smartphone users.

3. Real-time confirmation and processing
As soon as a customer pays, the payment is confirmed immediately. This allows you to deliver faster and reduces the risk of incorrect or duplicate orders.

4. Trusted brand among consumers
MobilePay's reputation and reliability mean that customers are more likely to complete a purchase, even at lesser-known online stores.

Disadvantages:

1. Only suitable for Danish and Finnish consumers.
MobilePay only works for users with a bank account and phone number from Denmark or Finland. This option is therefore not available to international customers.

2. Not available as standard with all PSPs
MobilePay is not supported by every (international) PSP. This limits your choice of payment provider or integration options.

3. Possible additional costs for currency conversion
Since MobilePay is processed in DKK (Danish kroner) or EUR (for Finnish users), currency conversion fees may apply if your webshop operates in a different currency or you wish to be paid in a different currency.

4. No direct support for recurring payments
MobilePay is primarily intended for one-off payments. It is less suitable for subscriptions or recurring billing than credit cards or SEPA direct debits, for example.
