Wero is a new European payment method (launched by the European Payments Initiative) that aims to unite local solutions such as iDEAL, Bancontact and Paylib into a single online payment system. For webshops, Wero promises fast, secure bank payments throughout Europe. It will be rolled out in phases over the coming years, including via participating banks and Payment Service Providers (PSPs). Wero will soon be an essential part of your checkout process if you sell in Europe.
Wero is a new digital payment method developed by a group of major European banks and payment companies. Together, they form the European Payments Initiative (EPI). The goal? A single, user-friendly payment solution for the whole of Europe. Think of it as a digital wallet that allows your customers to pay in webshops, shops and to each other – without having to go through credit card companies.
The system is built on existing technology from well-known methods such as iDEAL (Netherlands) and Payconiq (Belgium). Wero is therefore not entirely new, but rather a smart, European further development of systems that have already proven themselves.
The rollout began in 2024 in countries such as Belgium, France and Germany, with the Netherlands likely to follow in 2025 or early 2026. Ultimately, everyone in Europe should be able to pay with Wero – either through their own bank or via the Wero app.
Wero works with direct bank payments, also known as instant payments. At checkout, the customer selects Wero and is automatically redirected to their bank or Wero app. There, they confirm the payment using Face ID, fingerprint or PIN code. Simple, fast and secure.
Payments are processed immediately, even in the evenings and at weekends. As a business owner, you therefore have immediate certainty and the money in your account. No waiting times or chargebacks (disputes). Wero is similar to iDEAL, but European and with more features.
The exact costs depend on your Payment Service Provider (PSP). Because Wero does not use expensive card networks, the costs are likely to be similar to iDEAL – or even slightly lower. Think of a fixed amount per transaction or a low percentage. No surprises: real-time payments, no chargebacks, and a clear cost structure.
When introducing such an important new payment method, it is wise to compare Wero rates between Payment Service Providers. Use our free Provider Selector to determine whether you are paying the right price or whether it might be wise to switch.
