How does TWINT work as a payment method for online shops?

TWINT is the most widely used mobile payment app in Switzerland. Customers link their bank account or credit card to the TWINT app and can then pay directly via their smartphone – in online shops, at the point of sale or via QR code.

TWINT offers a user-friendly and secure payment experience similar to Apple Pay and iDEAL, but fully mobile and locally embedded in the Swiss market. For you as a business owner, this means direct payments, a locally trusted method and better conversion rates with Swiss customers.

How much does a payment via TWINT cost?

The costs for TWINT transactions are usually between 1% and 2% of the purchase amount, depending on the Payment Service Provider (PSP) and the volume. Sometimes there is also a small fixed fee per payment.

The exact rates vary per provider. Want to know which PSP is most advantageous for you? Easily compare Payment Service Providers that support TWINT and request multiple quotes.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of TWINT?

Advantages:

1. Very popular in Switzerland
TWINT is the standard mobile payment method in Switzerland. The vast majority of Swiss consumers use the app every day, both online and in physical shops. If you are targeting the Swiss market, you really cannot do without it.

2. Fully mobile and customer-friendly
Customers pay easily via their smartphone – without a bank card or card reader. All they need to do is scan a QR code or click in the TWINT app. This ensures a smooth checkout process and fewer dropouts, especially on mobile devices.

3. Instant payouts and real-time confirmation
TWINT payments are processed and confirmed almost immediately. For you as a webshop, this means less risk, immediate confirmation of receipt and faster order processing.

Disadvantages:

1. Only suitable for Swiss consumers
TWINT only works for customers with a Swiss bank account and mobile phone number. For international webshops, it is therefore only interesting if you are active on the Swiss market.

2. Limited support outside the DACH region
Not all Payment Service Providers outside Switzerland support TWINT as standard. This limits your choice of PSPs, especially if you operate internationally. (click here for PSPs that offer TWINT as a payment method)

3. Costs may be higher for low volumes
TWINT transactions are usually priced as a percentage. For lower volumes or small ticket amounts, the costs can be relatively high compared to, for example, an iDEAL or SEPA payment.
